Mental Health Awareness Week at Reddico
Mental health is the elephant in the room which is finally getting the attention it needs. As something of a taboo subject for the best part of the 20th century, attitudes towards how we approach this delicate aspect of human nature are definitely shifting.
This week has been a prime example of that. Even in these troubling times, workforces all across the country have been putting mental health at the forefront of their thinking.
We are certainly no exception. It’s been a busy week, with lots of really rewarding outcomes for the whole team. Everyone chooses to acknowledge mental health awareness week differently, but this is how we got involved.
Monday – Check-ins
A nice, easy one to start with. Everyone was asked to make sure they check-in with at least one other person at some point during the day.
While it might not sound like a lot, having a person reach out to find out if you’re feeling like your regular self can make a huge difference. Especially during a quarantine which makes you feel a little lost at times.
Tuesday – Secret Summer Santa
Santa is doing two shifts this year. In an attempt to bring a little extra joy into everyone’s lives, we were all given a £15 gift card to spend on a randomly selected team member.
The gifts themselves were great, but it’s the thought people put into them which hit the mark for most people.
That’s arguably the best part of any present-giving season – seeing the happiness on someone’s face when they realise you’ve actually put some consideration into their gift.
Wednesday – Daily tasks
If you’ve ever played a video game before, you’ll be familiar with the concept of daily tasks which earn rewards. In this instance, the bonus for team members was a happier mood for both themselves and those they work most closely with.
We were tasked with:
Checking in with a new person (compared to Monday)
Taking 10 minutes to care for ourselves
Doing at least 30 minutes of exercise
Sending a funny or cute picture to a colleague
Needless to say, a lot of Tiger King memes were shared around.
Thursday – Video from Lizzy Yarnold
Kent’s very own Olympic sensation, Lizzy Yarnold, was kind enough to send over a video highlighting how she stayed in good mental health during her busy schedule.
Some of her top tips included keeping a routine, as well as the importance of sleep health. Lizzy is from Sevenoaks, and won back-to-back gold medals in the skeleton at the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics.
Her advice struck a chord with most of the team, especially some of the mothers – with Lizzy now balancing her time around caring for her young daughter.
Friday – Team catch-up
We’ve been doing team catch-ups on a Friday afternoon since the first week of lockdown. This one was a little different though, with a focus placed on sharing what we learnt (and the gifts we got from Summer Secret Santa) during the week.
The team spoke about some of the struggles they’ve faced during lockdown, as well as the positives that have helped them get through this troubling period.

Let’s be frank, it’s been a tough couple of months for everyone. But with the Reddico team spirit pulling us through, we know it’ll just be a matter of time before things get back to normal.
